From the Depths
No one has figured out why, but some humans can look the creature dead in the eyes and remain completely unaffected. Others get a minor headache but keep their free will. The unlucky majority bleeds from their eyes, nose, mouth, and ears as whoever they were is purged from their body.
It’s estimated that about two percent of the population was not turned or killed when the creature rose. Based on running calculations the best guess of a current global population is somewhere around six or seven million. Of this, only a few thousand are guiders.
Many survived initially by hiding underground. When the guiders found them they migrated them using blindfolds, bags, or covered trucks (when fuel was still available). Many of those currently residing in stronghold were born there and are second or third generation survivors.
